A British male doctor was attacked by a shark yesterday but escaped death by punching the animal in the face.

Charlie Fry, 25, was on a beach north of Sydney, Australia when the shark suddenly jumped out of the water and bit him on the right shoulder.

"I punched him in the face with my left hand," he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Fry said he was reminded of surfer Mick Fanning, who famously faced off against a shark in a competition in 2015. "When it happened, I said to myself, 'Do like Mick, punch it in the nose,' " he recalled.

After punching the shark back, Fry climbed onto his board and swam to shore.

Police said the shark was about 2 meters long. It left several bite marks on Fry's hand. The doctor went home after being treated at the hospital.

Rescue helicopter crews captured images of the shark in the area shortly after the attack. The beach was closed today, officials said.

There have been 18 shark attacks in Australia so far this year, including one fatality.
