Passion fruit yield reaches 25 tons/ha in Tuong Duong

(Baonghean.vn) - With nearly 3 hectares of passion fruit planted on a trial basis, now ready for harvest, the average estimated yield of 25 tons/ha has brought a new direction in economic development for the Mong people in the remote areas of Nhon Mai commune, Tuong Duong district (Nghe An).

Mr. Nguyen Van Hai - Chairman of Tuong Duong District People's Committee surveyed the passion fruit garden and said that the district can expand to over 500 hectares.

In recent weeks, many Mong households in Tham Tham village have been very happy when their passion fruit acreage yields fruit every day. Mr. Va Ba Gia, one of the pioneers in planting new trees, said: "The nature of the Mong people is diligence and hard work. Now that they have applied new methods and planted new trees, they are very happy to have high income. I hope that businesses will buy all the fruit for the people to increase their income...".

Passion fruit planting officially started in early 2016 with 8 households receiving a trial on 2.7 hectares, the province and district supported 100% of the seeds and sent agricultural and extension officers to coordinate with the locality to guide the stages from choosing a location to prepare the land, handling the field to planting and care techniques. After 8 months, the first harvests were harvested. The estimated yield of passion fruit in Tuong Duong is 20 - 30 tons/hectare, the current purchase price is 9,000/1kg.

Passion fruit grown in Tuong Duong has large, even, sweet and fragrant fruit.

Mr. Lo Kham Kha - Head of the Agriculture Department of Tuong Duong district said: "After a period of piloting passion fruit cultivation in Tham Tham, the results were very good, the quality of the passion fruit is very suitable for the land and climate. According to the district's assessment, passion fruit can be expanded to Mai Son and Huu Khuong communes. In 2017, the district will expand to 10-12 hectares".

Passion fruit area in Tham Tham village (Nhon Mai - Tuong Duong) is green and lush, with an average yield of about 25 tons/ha.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hai - Chairman of the District People's Committee said that Tuong Duong area can grow over 500 hectares of passion fruit; accordingly, the district is submitting to the provinces and the Provincial People's Committee for approval of passion fruit material areas in the district.
