Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokadzu Matsuno announced on December 14 that he would resign amid a fundraising scandal within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
According to TASS, Japan's chief cabinet secretary is responsible for coordinating the work of all ministries and also acts as the government's spokesman. Former Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi is expected to be appointed to this position.
Immediately after the above information appeared, it was announced that the Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party's Policy Research Council, Koichi Hagiuda, would also resign.
Earlier in the day, Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yasutoshi Nishimura, Agriculture Minister Ichiro Miyashita and Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Junji Suzuki also resigned.
The scandal has affected several factions within the LDP, including the largest group once led by the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and has caused the Japanese government's approval rating to fall to around 23%.
