Dyes for fabrics, paper, wood… are used to beautify fresh bamboo shoots!
The Da Nang Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Fishery Product Quality Management has just discovered 7 samples of fresh yellow bamboo shoots containing residues of Auramine o (also known as yellow o) used to dye fabrics, paper, wood..., and paint walls, which is banned from use in food processing!
On March 31, Mr. Nguyen Tu, Head of the Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Fishery Product Quality Management in Da Nang, said that, implementing the direction of the Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on strengthening inspection and supervision to ensure food safety for people, the Department conducted inspections, collected 25 samples of fresh bamboo shoots and pickled cabbage at markets and food processing facilities in the city, and sent them to the Ho Chi Minh City Laboratory Analysis Center (Ho Chi Minh City Department of Science and Technology) to test for the banned substance Auramine o (also known as yellow o).

The Da Nang Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Quality Management recommends that consumers should use natural, uncolored bamboo shoots. Do not buy and use yellow-colored bamboo shoots currently sold in markets and bamboo shoot production facilities. |
The analysis results of 9 samples showed that 2 natural white bamboo shoots did not contain yellow pigment; and 7 fresh yellow bamboo shoots all had yellow pigment residue. According to many documents, yellow pigment is a synthetic colorant only used in industry to dye fabrics, paper, wood, etc. and to make wall paint, it is toxic to humans and is therefore banned from use in food processing.
From this incident, Mr. Nguyen Tu said, the Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Fishery Product Quality Management in Da Nang immediately issued a notice advising consumers to use natural bamboo shoots, not colored. Do not buy and use yellow-colored bamboo shoots currently sold in markets and bamboo shoot production facilities.
Nowadays, food processing and trading establishments overuse food additives, especially colorants, to make their products look good, but they do not know that they are harmful to human health. Therefore, people need to be careful when buying and using colored foods without knowing whether the colorants are safe for food or not./.
Prohibited acts in Article 5 of the Law on Food Safety, for easy remembering, are often called "3 prohibitions". These include the prohibition of using chemicals of unknown origin; chemicals prohibited from use in food production and trading activities (such as yellowing agent...); the prohibition of using food additives and food processing aids that have passed their expiry date; the prohibition of using food additives and food processing aids that are not on the list of permitted use; or on the list of permitted use, but exceed the permitted limit. |
