Grandson sentenced to death, uncle to indefinite prison term for drugs
(Baonghean.vn) - Knowing that his nephew was preparing to transport a large shipment of drugs from Nghe An to Dak Nong province for sale, his uncle asked to go along. As a result, the nephew was sentenced to death, while his uncle received a life sentence.
On June 14, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial of two defendants Ly Giong Po (born 1987) and Ly Ba Ca (born 1981), both residing in Tri Le commune, Que Phong district, for the crime of "Illegal drug trafficking”. In addition, Po was also prosecuted for “Illegal possession of narcotics”.
According to the indictment, around March 2021, while working as a rubber worker in Dak Nong province, Po met a colleague named Tong Cho and often used drugs together. Because of his addiction, Cho knew that the price of drugs in Dak Nong was higher than Nghe An, so he discussed with Po buying drugs to sell for profit.
In November 2021, after returning home for a while, Po contacted a Laotian to buy 6 heroin cakes for 480 million VND. Because they were acquaintances, the seller agreed to let Po buy on credit. On the day Po went to buy the drugs, the seller also gave Po a package of pink pheasant to use. Po hid all the drugs he bought on credit under the bed.

At the same time, Ly Ba Ca - Po's uncle came to visit. Knowing that his nephew was preparing to bring drugs to Dak Nong to sell, Ca asked to go with him. Po agreed, promising to call him when he left.
At 2:00 a.m. on November 26, Po put the wooden box containing drugs in a sack and took a bus with Ca to Dak Nong. When the bus reached the Truong Banh intersection in Que Phong district, the authorities checked and arrested the uncle and nephew along with 6 heroin bars (weighing more than 2.1 kg). In addition, the authorities also discovered a package of pink phien (more than 19 grams) on Po's person.
At the trial, while defendant Po admitted to buying and selling drugs for profit, defendant Ca did not admit. Ca said he asked to follow his nephew to work as a worker and did not know about buying and selling drugs.
The panel of judges determined that although in this case, the defendant Ca did not admit to committing the crime. However, based on the results of the investigation, questioning and public debate at the trial, the defendant Po's testimony had sufficient grounds to affirm that the Procuracy's prosecution of the defendant Ca for the crime of Illegal drug trafficking was the right person and the right crime.
Considering the case as a whole, the panel sentenced defendant Ly Giong Po to 6 years in prison for Illegal possession of narcotics and death for Illegal drug trafficking; the total sentence imposed on defendant Po is the death penalty. Sentenced defendant Ly Ba Ca to life in prison for Illegal drug trafficking.
