AP reported that a fire broke out at a nursing home in the northwestern Spanish city of Zaragoza on the morning of July 12, killing eight elderly people and injuring 12 others.

Gustavo Alcalde, spokesman for the Zaragoza Interior Department, said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

In addition to the eight elderly people who died, the fire also caused burns to 11 other people and one staff member at the nursing home. Among them, one man suffered severe burns and is in critical condition.

AP, citing a firefighter named Carlos Carilla, reported that the fire originated in a first-floor bedroom of the three-story nursing home. The mattress in the room had been burned and melted.
