“Based on the information we have at the moment, at least 25 students and teachers have died. Our staff are still working at the scene,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Last August, The Star reported that the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Service was concerned about fire safety measures at some private and unregistered religious schools, citing statistics showing 211 fires involving such schools since 2015.
Also in early August 2017, 16 people, including eight students, were lucky to escape when a fire broke out early in the morning at the private religious school Al-Taqwa in Baling, Kedah.
Previously, on May 7, a fire also broke out at a private religious school in Sabak Bernam, Selangor. However, no one was injured in this fire.
In April alone, 519 new religious schools were registered across Malaysia. However, according to estimates, this number is higher than the actual number because many educational establishments of this type are not registered with the authorities./.
