Playing at the Wanda Metropolitano, where Atletico have yet to concede a goal this season, Chelsea played with confidence, relying on a muscular midfield, N'golo Kante and Tiemoue Bakayoko suffocating the space of the home team's creative specialists.

Antonio Conte's side created the first chances of the game. Eden Hazard, making his second start of the season, was at the heart of Chelsea's attacks. The Belgian's dribbling ability opened up opportunities for him and Morata in the opening minutes but both shots went wide.

The coordination between Hazard and Morata in this match was very impressive, although they certainly have only worked together for a short time. The proof was Hazard's passing to his teammate, then moving to receive the pass and hitting the post after more than 10 minutes of the match.

Midway through the first half, Morata continued to have chances but his header from David Luiz's long pass was pushed over the bar by goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Chelsea had the better of the game, had more possession but eventually conceded a penalty.

Luiz fouled Lucas Hernandez in defending a corner. The Brazilian defender did not jump to challenge for the ball, but instead pulled his opponent down. From the free kick, Antoine Griezmann fooled Thibaut Courtois to give the home team the lead.

But the threat posed by Hazard and Morata eventually cost Atletico. Seeing Juanfran suffer under Hazard's footwork, two Atletico players came out to cover but could not stop the Chelsea midfielder from crossing. Inside, Morata showed his wisdom once again, moving diagonally to the near post and making just enough of a header to beat Oblak.

It was Morata's eighth goal in nine games since his move to Chelsea and it was a reminder to Diego Costa, who was watching from the stands, that the Stamford Bridge outfit would not soon forget the goals scored by the Atletico-born striker. More importantly, the goal was the result of a perfect combination between Hazard and Morata, something Conte is keen to develop and turn into a powerful weapon for Chelsea this season.

In the final minute of stoppage time in the second half, Michy Batshuayi, who had replaced Morata 10 minutes earlier, continued to show his scoring instincts. The 23-year-old striker was in the right place to tap the ball into the net after a cross from Marcos Alonso. Before leaving the field, Morata missed the chance to score twice when he failed to finish one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

The win was a deserved result for Chelsea in a match where they dominated their opponents both in terms of possession and chances. This was only Atletico's second defeat in 24 home games in the Champions League since Diego Simeone took charge.
