Chelsea will make history if they reach the top 4 this season
No Premier League team has made it into the top four after a start as bad as their current champions.
Chelsea are currently 15th in the Premier League, with just 11 points from their first 10 games. No team in Premier League history since 1992 has had such a poor start to the season and managed to finish in the top four.
Specifically, no team with less than 13 points in the first 10 rounds of the Premier League season has been able to reach fourth place at the end of the season.
The two rare teams to achieve the miracle of finishing in the top four after only 13 points from the first 10 games of the season were Leeds Utd (1998-1999) and Man Utd (2014-2015). Leeds, under coach David O'Leary, finished the season with 67 points, while Van Gaal's team reached 70 points on the final day of last season.

Breaking into the top four to qualify for next season's Champions League will therefore be a huge challenge for Mourinho and his players from now on. Chelsea are currently 11 points behind fourth-placed Man Utd, and have only won one of their last seven matches in all competitions.
The prospect of Chelsea successfully defending their title is also very remote. Specifically, statistics show that no team has won the Premier League with fewer than 18 points from their first 10 games. No team has finished second after earning fewer than 16 points from the same number of games at the beginning of the season.
However, if they need an example of overcoming difficulties, Chelsea can look to Liverpool, the opponent they will face in the match that is said to decide Mourinho's fate this weekend.
In the 2006-2007 season, Liverpool proved that a team with a slow start could still turn things around. At that time, Liverpool had only 14 points from the first 10 matches of the Premier League season, but still finished third in the competition, and reached the Champions League final, where they lost to Milan.
And in that miraculous season of overcoming difficulties, Liverpool did not change coaches. Thanks to absolute trust, coach Rafa Benitez helped the team gradually regain their form after a bad start.
