The robber who severely injured a female doctor with a knife has been arrested more than two months after committing the crime.

Regarding the case of the female doctor who was attacked and injured in Saigon in mid-November 2017, the latest development is that on the evening of February 3rd, the police in District 9, Ho Chi Minh City, arrested the suspect. The suspect has been identified as Mai Thanh Dat (born in 1999, residing in the area).

As previously reported, in the early morning of November 15th, Ms. A (born in 1964, residing in District 9) was walking from her home in Phuoc Long B Ward, District 9, to Hanoi Highway to catch a bus to her workplace in Dong Nai. As she walked along a small road, a few dozen meters from Hanoi Highway, a young man on a motorbike sped up from behind.

The young man grabbed Ms. A's hair, attacked her with a weapon, slashing her head and hands, causing injuries. Then, he snatched her handbag and sped away on his motorbike.

Ms. A was attacked with a knife and robbed of her belongings; she was taken to the hospital by local residents for emergency treatment.

The locals took Ms. A to the hospital for emergency treatment. In her statement to the police, Ms. A said that her stolen handbag contained 1.6 million VND, an iPhone 6, and some personal documents and belongings.

Ms. A is a practicing doctor and currently works at a private medical facility in Dong Nai.

During the investigation, the District 9 Police determined this was a brazen and dangerous robbery, so they established a special task force to combat it. Subsequently, the police identified Dat as the suspect, but he had fled the area.

On the night of February 3rd, Dat secretly returned to a relative's house in Phuoc Long A ward, District 9, where he was arrested by detectives from the District 9 Police.

At the police station, Dat admitted to using a machete to attack and rob Mrs. A in mid-November 2017 as described above. Dat also confessed that he was addicted to methamphetamine and committed the robbery to earn money to buy drugs.

In addition, Dat confessed that he, along with several other individuals whose identities are currently unknown, had committed extremely dangerous stabbings and robberies in suburban areas. The District 9 Police are currently expanding their investigation.
