Only one sniper in US police ambush

Dallas officials say a sniper single-handedly killed five police officers during the protest.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings announced that suspect Micah Xavier Johnson is believed to be the sole gunman who carried out the massacre, AP reported.

According to Rawlings, authorities concluded that "the shots came from different floors of one building, from one suspect."He added that Johnson was carrying an AR-15 and wearing a bulletproof vest. He did not know if Johnson was wearing a helmet, but he was told by subordinates that he had good protection.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott added that investigators are still looking into the possibility that he had accomplices or someone who knew about the attack in advance.

At a press conference in New York, US Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson said thatMicahJohnson does not appear to have had any "links or been inspired by any international terrorist organisation".

The attack occurred on July 7 as crowds were marching and protesting in Dallas against the repeated shootings of black people by US police. Twelve police officers and two civilians were shot in the ambush, of which five police officers were killed. Johnson was surrounded by police in a garage in downtown Dallas. Police engaged him in a 45-minute gun battle, and he was eventually killed by a bomb-carrying robot.

Johnson, 25, was active duty in the US Army Reserves and deployed to Afghanistan from November 2013 to July 2014.
