Biden's lawyer said the newly discovered document, from his time as Vice President of the United States, was located in a storage area in the garage of Biden's home in the port city of Wilmington, Delaware, where he often spent weekends.

Mr. Garland announced that lawyer-former prosecutor Robert Hur will be appointed as special counsel and given the authority to examine whether this violates any US laws.

Previously, in a related move, US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, on January 12 called on the US Congress to investigate the incident.

On the same day, President Joe Biden said he was "fully cooperating" with the US Department of Justice after finding classified documents in his home.
