Williams sisters into Wimbledon semi-finals

This year's grass-court Grand Slam final could be a battle of attrition between two of tennis' most famous sisters.

Venus Williams reached the semi-finals after beating Yaroslava Shvedova 7-6, 6-3. It was the first time since 2009 that the 36-year-old had reached the last four at the All England Club. The eighth seed became the oldest player to reach a Grand Slam semi-final in 22 years.

Earlier, Serena had an easy victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova with the same score of 6-4 after two sets and opened up the possibility of an internal confrontation of the Williams family in the Grand Slam final after many years of absence of this famous battle in women's tennis.

In the semi-finals, Serena will face another Russian (she has met three Russians in a row) Elena Vesnina. Meanwhile, Venus will face fourth seed Angelique Kerber.

"We haven't talked too much about being in the final together but we'll play doubles together in a while. We're both happy to be in the semi-finals. It'll be great to play in the final against my sister. Venus is a tough opponent. I always want her to win but not in the final, when I'm there," Serena said.

Kerber beat Simona Halep 7-5, 7-6 to advance while unseeded Vesnina defeated Dominika Cibulkova 6-2, 6-2.
