On February 22, Transparency International (TI) released the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2017, ranking 180 countries and territories based on the opinions of experts and business people about corruption in the public sector.

According to the recently released index, Vietnam scored 35/100 points, ranking 107/180 globally. Towards Transparency (TT), TI's national focal point in Vietnam, said that the slight increase in CPI score for two consecutive years (2016-2017) is a positive indicator for anti-corruption efforts in recent times.

However, on the CPI scale of 0-100 (where 0 is very corrupt and 100 is very clean), the problem of corruption in the public sector in Vietnam is still considered very serious. This result also confirms the assessment of the Party and State on the state of corruption in Vietnam.

The above assessment noted that in 2017, with strong commitments from the Party and State, domestic anti-corruption work achieved a number of outstanding results, including the trial of serious corruption cases involving many high-ranking officials.

Mr. Trinh Xuan Thanh was tried in two embezzlement cases.

Vietnam is also continuing to improve the legal framework on anti-corruption, such as amending the current Anti-Corruption Law to conform with international standards.

In addition, Transparency International frankly recommends that, in the context of Vietnam implementing the National Action Plan on the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aiming to achieve systemic and sustainable changes and "significantly reduce all forms of corruption and bribery" by 2030 (Target 16.5), Vietnam needs to step up corruption prevention measures, strengthen and build effective institutions, linked to accountability and with the participation of the whole society.
