On the evening of May 10, Ha Tinh City Police (Ha Tinh) said that suspect Le Dinh Kien admitted to breaking into the house of Ms. Tran Ha Quy (30 years old, daughter of Police Major General Tran Cong Truong) to rob property.
Kien is studying for a master's degree in economics in China, but during his thesis defense, he took a leave to return home.
According to the authorities, Kien's house is on Nhat Tan Street (Thach Linh Ward, Ha Tinh City), nearly one kilometer away from Quy's house. Kien said that he was upset about his parents' love affair so he came up with the idea of robbing a large sum of money to take his mother to a faraway place.

Kien prepared clothes, gloves, electric wire, and knife. In the early morning of May 9, Kien climbed over the fence of the villa and broke into Ms. Quy's yard. When the maid opened the door to do laundry, Kien rushed forward and used a knife to control her, demanding to be taken to the second floor. There, he entered the room of the female homeowner whose husband was away, forced her to open the safe, and gave her money.
Even though he got several tens of millions of dong, Kien discovered a savings book in the safe. That morning, he asked Ms. Quy to take a leave of absence from work and go to the bank to withdraw the money.
To avoid the homeowner calling the police, the robber forced her to make repeated phone calls via FaceTime and record videos on the way to send them back. He threatened that if Ms. Quy did not comply, he would "deal with" the four hostages in the house: her two children, her father-in-law, and the maid.

At a bank in Ha Tinh, Ms. Quy continued filming the procedure to withdraw money and "transmit messages" as requested. However, while writing the note, she wrote down the phone number of her father, Major General of Police Tran Cong Truong (working at the Ministry of Public Security), and gave it to the bank staff, asking them to report that she was in danger.
The bank then called this number, General Truong was in Ha Tinh so they called two more police officers to assist.
Arriving at his daughter's house, seeing the robber holding his father-in-law and the hostages in the bathroom with their backs turned, Mr. Truong rushed in, grabbed his arms, and took away his weapon. Kien panicked and struggled, but was kicked into the bathroom door. The two policemen joined forces and subdued the robber.
According to authorities, Ms. Quy's maid was injured in the arm while struggling with the robber.
