Sharing of Nghe An military medics participating in missions in the Republic of South Sudan
(Baonghean.vn) - Participating in the United Nations peacekeeping operations is a noble mission, of great international humanitarian significance and full of responsibility for the Vietnam People's Army. Nghe An is honored to have 4 military medics (from Military Hospital 4) on duty in the Republic of South Sudan.
International duty, protecting the Fatherland from afar
The Republic of South Sudan is a country located in East Africa. South Sudan was separated from Sudan after many years of civil war, declared independence on July 9, 2011 and became one of the youngest countries in the world. After its birth, the Republic of South Sudan lacked stability and development due to armed and ethnic conflicts. Therefore, all aspects of life and living conditions of the people in this country are extremely difficult.
To support the Republic of South Sudan, since 2011, the United Nations has established the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan to support the Government of South Sudan in consolidating peace, promoting development and bringing peace and equality to the people. Many countries have sent personnel to join the United Nations peacekeeping force in South Sudan, including Vietnam.

Carrying out this noble mission of great international humanitarian significance, Vietnam has so far sent many military medical officers and soldiers to participate in the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan in different stages. The main task is to participate in work at the field hospital, providing medical examination and treatment for leaders, staff of the Mission and people in this country...
During the period 2020-2023, in Nghe An, there are 4 military medical soldiers from Military Hospital 4 who are honored to participate in an international mission in South Sudan. They are Major, Doctor Nguyen Cong Long - working at Department C7; Captain Bui Thi Thuy Hang - nurse at Department C8; Senior Lieutenant Ha Thanh Minh - nurse at Department A4 and Lieutenant Nguyen Manh Dung - nurse at Department A10.
For the four medical soldiers stationed in the beloved homeland of Uncle Ho, being assigned to carry out the mission to help our friend in the Republic of South Sudan is a great honor. Therefore, everyone is highly determined to complete the mission.
I accepted the mission in a family with its own difficulties: my father-in-law was a war invalid, my mother-in-law was sick, my husband was working far away, and my children were still young. However, as a soldier, I was well aware that carrying out this mission meant protecting the Fatherland early and from afar. Therefore, I was very ready and determined to accept the mission assigned by the Fatherland and the Army and arranged my own work to leave. I was very reassured that the leaders and commanders regularly contacted me to encourage me and visited my family.

The four of us joined the force on December 25, 2020, the field mission started on April 27, 2022, and the field mission ended on July 7, 2023. In the beginning, we were trained according to the United Nations program at the General Staff and the Department of Peacekeeping. The training content included professional knowledge, language (English), culture, customs of the indigenous people and how to handle situations (anti-kidnapping, how to handle robberies, how to handle situations when stuck in the forest, in emergency cases surrounded by rebels...).
During 15 months of field work in South Sudan, 4 soldiers from Nghe An performed their duties at Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5 (with the participation of 63 Vietnamese medical soldiers) stationed in Bentiu - Unit State, South Sudan. Carrying out their international mission in South Sudan, the soldiers had to face a number of difficulties such as language barriers when communicating with peacekeeping forces from other countries and especially with the local people; time zone differences; hot and dry weather; high risk of epidemics; limited living conditions... Performing their duties in a context of instability and armed conflicts that often occur, the risk of "falling bombs and stray bullets" is lurking.
Worthy of the name Uncle Ho's soldiers
Major, Doctor Nguyen Cong Long shared: There are many difficulties, but all of us have maintained our bravery, stance, and will; promoted solidarity; adhered to the principles and discipline of the soldiers of the Vietnam People's Army, adapted to the living environment, observed and learned to accumulate experience and excellently performed all tasks required by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan...

In addition to performing their duties well at Level 2 Field Hospital No. 5, the Vietnamese blue beret soldiers also regularly conduct charitable activities, providing free medical examinations and treatment, medicine for local people, gifts, books, and clothes for children; and instructing people on how to cultivate, grow vegetables, and raise animals hygienically.
During their work, the Vietnamese blue beret soldiers have built trust between the Vietnamese Army and the people of South Sudan. Lieutenant Nguyen Manh Dung shared his joy: They also call us Uncle Ho's soldiers. They love and trust us like family and we are the ones who help them in all circumstances. That is the greatest success, because without the trust of the people, the mission cannot be completed.

Having performed their assigned tasks excellently, the Vietnamese blue beret soldiers have been highly appreciated by the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan; they have been awarded the United Nations Medal for their contributions to peacekeeping twice. Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian himself - Commander of the Military Force of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan wishes that Vietnam would send more personnel to work at the Mission.
Participating in the peacekeeping mission in the Republic of South Sudan this time is the pride of the medical sector of Military Region 4 in general and Military Hospital 4 in particular. The 4 medical soldiers have excellently completed the assigned mission and safely returned to their units; they are a shining example of President Ho Chi Minh's teachings on international solidarity, contributing to the excellent fulfillment of our Army's international obligations in the current period.
