(Baonghean.vn) - It's unclear when exactly, but the basket has been an integral part of the lives of ethnic minority communities in many mountainous areas of Nghe An province. The basket is used when going to the fields, working in the gardens, or going to the market, helping the people carry necessary items and supplies.

A basket is a handcrafted item made of bamboo or rattan, commonly used in the daily lives of ethnic minority communities. Baskets are typically used to carry items, but some have two straps for easier carrying on the shoulder. Interestingly, some baskets only have one strap; instead of using the shoulder, people wear the strap on their forehead, eliminating the need to hold the contents with their hands. Therefore, they are very convenient to use, especially when traveling long distances. (Photo: Dinh Tuyen)

Baskets come in many different sizes, large and small, and can be woven densely or loosely to hold various items, food, and products used in labor. Baskets are usually cylindrical, with a wide opening at the top for convenient storage. Besides rattan and bamboo, people can also use reeds and canes to weave baskets. Photo: Dinh Tuyen

Mr. Ha Van Hoan (70 years old), from Long Thang village, Hanh Dich commune (Que Phong district), said: "Baskets are familiar items in the daily lives of the people here, but not everyone knows how to weave a beautiful basket. Learning to weave baskets requires patience, meticulousness, and carefulness. Therefore, currently, not many people are skilled at weaving baskets; usually, it is the elderly in the village or commune who weave baskets to order for their neighbors and for use in labor and family life." The decorative patterns on the baskets are created by weaving together bamboo strips dyed with forest tree resin, or by turning the strips of the same color over to create two different colors. The patterned bands are usually located near the rim, bottom, or middle of the basket, mainly consisting of black lines, rhombuses, and diagonal lines... In Chau Khe commune (Con Cuong district), people have incorporated the unique patterns from the traditional clothing of the Thai ethnic group into their baskets. Therefore, in addition to their practical use, these products also have aesthetic value and are favored by consumers. Photo: Dinh Tuyen

“Since I learned to work, I’ve carried a basket on my back. Now our lives have changed a lot, our houses are more spacious, and we can buy many modern farming tools, but the habit of using baskets still remains. Here, we women aren’t used to using plastic baskets; everyone carries a basket because it’s very convenient,” shared Ms. Vy Thi Binh from Diem village, Chau Khe commune (Con Cuong). Photo: Dinh Tuyen

Despite the changing times, the traditional basket (gùi) retains its cultural value in the spiritual life of ethnic minorities in western Nghe An province. In particular, women use baskets instead of plastic bags and containers when going to the market, preserving their culture and contributing to reducing plastic waste in the environment.
