The incident occurred at around 1 p.m. on August 8. A US Navy F-18 fighter jet nearly collided with an Iranian QOM-1 unmanned aerial vehicle while preparing to land on the USS Nimitz in the Persian Gulf, Navy Times quoted a US military official as saying.
The F-18 had to actively avoid the UAV and land safely.
"If the F-18 had not moved," the two aircraft would have collided, the official said. At one point, the F-18 and QOM-1 were only about 30 meters apart.
The official described the encounter as “unsafe, unprofessional… and dangerous.” It was the first time an Iranian drone had “interrupted a landing” and the 13th “unprofessional” encounter between US and Iranian forces this year.
