Vietnam's Gepard warship increases power with Paket-NK system

According to Mil Today, Russia is developing a Project 23420 anti-submarine warfare ship with the Paket-NK system for a Southeast Asian customer.

According to this source, the Almaz Central Naval Design Bureau (Russia) is designing and developing a Project 23420 anti-submarine ship equipped with the Paket-NK system to supply to a country in Southeast Asia.

"In fact, this project is intended for a foreign customer rather than the Russian Navy," said Dmitry Tsyganokov, Almaz's press representative.

Meanwhile, expert Andrey Frolov - Editor-in-Chief of Arms Exports magazine said that experts do not rule out transferring the license to manufacture Project 23420 anti-submarine frigates to this customer.

Although information about this Southeast Asian customer is still kept confidential by Russia, according to information published by Russian media in early 2016, if Vietnam continues to buy new ones, the Gepard warship will be equipped with the Paket-NK system.

Navy Recognition quoted Igor Krylov - one of the senior officials of the Russian Tactical Missile Corporation as saying that the new generation warships and old ships of the Russian Navy will be re-equipped with the most advanced anti-submarine weapons system ever.

According to Krylov, the first stage of this plan is to equip the Paket-NK anti-submarine system on warships for the Russian Navy. The next stage, this system will be equipped on warships for export, including the Gepard warship that Vietnam is using.

Paket-NK is the most modern multi-purpose anti-submarine torpedo system of the Russian Navy today, it is designed to both attack submarines as well as intercept enemy torpedoes at close range.

This anti-ship torpedo and anti-torpedo torpedo complex includes the MTT thermobaric torpedo and the M15 anti-ship jet torpedo. The system was first tested in 2006 on Steregushchy-class corvettes, Project 20380.

The Paket-NK system can operate independently or be integrated into the ship's anti-submarine/anti-torpedo system to counter a number of threats in fully automatic mode.

The system's tasks include providing target designation data for smaller heat-seeking torpedoes, based on data provided by the ship's sonar systems and command room. Paket-NK is a completely new weapon system, allowing surface warships to perform anti-submarine and anti-torpedo missions with high efficiency and thereby significantly increasing their survivability in combat.
