During his visit to Vietnam on January 2, 2012, the representative son of Cambodia - Prime Minister Hun Sen exclaimed: “In this world, is there any country that has helped the Cambodian people, especially liberating them from the Pol Pot genocidal regime and preventing their return? The answer is the Vietnamese people and army! The Cambodian people believe that only fairies and Buddhas can save people when they are in dire straits. Right when the Cambodian people were about to die, and could only clasp their hands and pray to fairies and Buddhas to come and save them, the Vietnamese volunteer army appeared. The Vietnamese army is the Buddhist army.”
In that “Buddhist army”, there are many people who are children of Nghe An. 40 years after the victory of the Southwestern border war, we met those veterans. The veterans who they considered “lucky” to survive and return told us about the great war of national defense. The war that, now – after a certain amount of history – looking back, they are proud to have contributed to firmly protecting the sacred border sovereignty of the Fatherland, raising high the flag of justice, helping the Cambodian people overthrow the Pol Pot - Khmer Rouge genocidal regime and strengthening the solidarity and friendship between the two countries.
