Government shutdown, hundreds of US federal employees line up to receive charity meals
Hundreds of federal employees, some with children in tow, patiently lined up to receive a charity lunch from the World Central Kitchen organization, unable to hide their anxiety about the government shutdown.
This US government shutdown has affected about 800,000 federal employees, forcing them to take time off or work without pay.
To help these needy people, a soup kitchen was set up, providing free hot lunches to federal employees.
The kitchen, initiated by the non-governmental charity World Central Kitchen, is located between Capitol Hill and the White House.
The kitchen pledges to provide free food until the US government is fully reopened.
Hundreds of government workers, some with children in tow, patiently lined up to receive hot lunches on a freezing winter day. They found warmth and humanity at the special soup kitchen, but they couldn’t hide their anxiety about the government shutdown.
On January 13, the Capital Food Bank provided food at five locations but only met half of the demand. The organization said it would double the number of food distribution points in the coming days.
Several other food providers in Washington DC have also announced that they will open additional soup kitchens in multiple locations to help federal employees during this difficult time.
