Mr. Klintsevich noted that today Russia has exactly the same reasons for not recognizing the state of Texas as US territory as Mr. Pompeo claims that Russia needs to return Crimea to Ukraine.
He also recalled that Crimea became Russian territory in 1783, more than 60 years before Texas became part of the United States.
“The decision of the Crimean people in the 2014 referendum to unify with Russia is a return to basics, and no power can reconsider it,” the senator stressed.
"I hope that the United States will finally stop trying to achieve the impossible, poisoning Russian-American relations and the political atmosphere around the world," the lawmaker wrote on his Facebook page.
