Allowing the reuse of Quinvaxem vaccine

On July 30, the Government Office issued an official dispatch conveying the direction of Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan to allow the reuse of Quinvaxem vaccine in the national expanded immunization program.

The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance coordinate to ensure funding for continued use of vaccines in expanded immunization, funding for research and production of domestic vaccines, and funding for development of the preventive health system. The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Science and Technology also research and report to the Prime Minister on the production of multivalent 6-in-1 vaccines to supply for expanded immunization.

Quinvaxem is a 5-in-1 vaccine against whooping cough, diphtheria, tetanus, Hib and hepatitis B, used in Vietnam since June 2010 under the sponsorship of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI). With a financial resource of about 38.5 million USD, GAVI will provide Quinvaxem until 2015. Since its use, Vietnam hasMaleimported about 15 million doses and used about 11 million doses.

However, after deaths occurred after vaccination with this vaccine in late 2012 and early 2013, vaccination has been suspended since May. After the investigation results showed that the deaths were not related to the quality of the vaccine, the Ministry of Health reported to the Government and has now agreed to allow the use of Quinvaxem again nationwide.
