On July 30th, the Government Office issued a document conveying the directive of Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan allowing the reintroduction of the Quinvaxem vaccine in the national expanded immunization program.

The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance are coordinating to ensure funding for the continued use of vaccines in the expanded immunization program, funding for research and production of domestic vaccines, and funding for the development of the preventive health system. The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Science and Technology are also researching and reporting to the Prime Minister on the production of a 6-in-1 multivalent vaccine for the expanded immunization program.

Quinvaxem is a 5-in-1 vaccine protecting against pertussis, diphtheria, tetanus, Hib, and hepatitis B. It has been used in Vietnam since June 2010, funded by the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI). With approximately US$38.5 million in funding, GAVI will provide Quinvaxem until 2015. Since its introduction, Vietnam has...MaleApproximately 15 million doses were imported, and about 11 million doses have been used.

However, following deaths after vaccination with this vaccine in late 2012 and early 2013, vaccinations were suspended from May until now. After an investigation concluded that the deaths were not related to the vaccine's quality, the Ministry of Health reported to the Government, and it has now been approved to allow the use of Quinvaxem nationwide again.
