On October 3, the world's largest social network, Facebook, launched a new "Marketplace" feature, allowing users to easily buy and sell products to friends and "neighbors" on the social networking platform.
With the launch of "Online Marketplace", Facebook hopes to compete with Craigslist and eBay - two of America's leading online classifieds and auction sites.
In a statement, Facebook said the new feature formalizes something some members of Facebook Groups have been doing for years.

"Facebook is a place where people connect, and in recent years, more and more people are using Facebook to connect in other ways like buying and selling things to each other," product manager Mary Ku emphasized.
According to Mary Ku, this activity started in Facebook Groups and has grown to more than 450 million users visiting buy and sell groups each month - from families in a local community to collectors around the world.
The “Online Marketplace” will facilitate buying and selling through “a convenient destination to discover, buy and sell items with people in your community,” she said.
