(Baonghean.vn) - Spark plugs are one of the parts of the ignition system. The important task of the spark plug is to generate a spark between the two electrodes to ignite the air-gasoline mixture from the carburetor that has been loaded into the combustion chamber. Therefore, you need to regularly check and replace the spark plugs when necessary.

1. Check spark plugs

Checking and cleaning the spark plugs is a regular and periodic task. This way you will know the operating condition of the engine as well as adjust it regularly. It is necessary to clean the carbon layer stuck on the electrodes when cleaning the spark plugs; at the same time, readjust the spark gap between the two electrodes.

You can rely on the color of the spark plug to assess the condition of the spark plug:

  • - Black, lots of carbon: due to excess fuel and lack of air, spark plugs used are too cold.

  • - White and dry spark plug: fuel mixture ratio is low, too much gas, spark plug used is too hot.

  • - Brick red or light brown: correct fuel mixing ratio, good spark plug operation, correct temperature range.

  • 2. How to choose spark plugs

Each type of vehicle has a different type of spark plug that is suitable for it. Of course, a professional mechanic will know and choose them, but if you are interested, you can recognize them as follows:

    • - Cold spark plugs: used for vehicles that often run at high speeds, heavy loads, high compression ratio, and long distances.

    • - Hot spark plug: opposite of the above case.

    • 3. Replace spark plugs

    • Correct replacement of spark plugs is very important, determining its durability.

- First of all, you need to compare the type and size symbols between the old and new spark plugs to choose the right type... Replacing the wrong spark plug will greatly reduce its lifespan and performance.

  • - Only replace spark plugs when the engine is completely cold.

  • - Do not pull the spark plug wire too hard, it will easily cause the wire to tear, instead rotate, twist, and pull gently.

  • - If the old spark plug is dirty, clean it to avoid dirt sticking around or on the new spark plug when replacing it.

  • - Turn the spark plug with a socket wrench, not an air tool. Stop when the spark plug is stuck, spray some oil on the plug, wait a few minutes and then continue, it will be much easier.
