Husband dug a well for 40 days to find water for his wife
A husband diligently spent 40 days digging a well for his wife, after she was banned from fetching water from a neighboring village because of her 'crime' of being born into a poor family.

Sangita was very happy and emotional when her husband dug the well. |
Loving his wife so much, with determination and love, Bapurao Tajne spent 6 hours a day digging a well until the whole family was happy to find water in Kolambeshwar village, India.
Tajne sadly recounted that the head of the other village forbade his wife from going there to fetch water, because she was born into a 'poor background' and belonged to the 'bottom' Dalit caste, according to the outdated and conservative concept that still exists in many parts of India.
The poor worker had no experience digging wells, so he randomly chose a piece of land, even though three nearby wells were running dry and the area where he was going to find a new water source showed no signs of improvement due to the recent drought.

The children in the village were also happy to have a new well. |
Mr. Tajne dug the well in 40 days and now provides free clean water to the entire Dalit community living in the same village.
'I didn't want to name the well because I didn't want people to come and disturb it,' Tajne said. 'But I felt the village headman had insulted us, just because we were poor and Dalit. I went home one day in March and cried all day,' Tajne said, choking up.
'I never stooped down to ask anyone for a drop of water. I went to Malegao to buy tools and an hour later, I started digging,' he said.
He added emotionally: 'I sincerely prayed to God before starting work. I thank God that my efforts have been rewarded.'
Tajne worked as a hired hand for 14 hours a day, and the rest of the time he dug wells, with only a few hours off a day. His family was very worried, because Tajne had never dug a well before.

Since the well dug by Mr. Tajne, Dalit women in the village have been getting water for free. |
He confided: 'It is difficult to describe how I felt during those miserable days. I just wanted to give water to the entire community to let people know that we Dalits never beg for water from other castes.'
Tajne's wife, Sangita, said: 'I couldn't help my husband until he found water. Now the whole family, except for the two young children, are helping him deepen and widen the well. It is now 4.5m deep and Tajne wants to deepen it another 1.5m.' She hopes neighbours will come to help the family complete the well for the whole village.
