Before this match, the Vietnamese team had many advantages after the opening match against Iraq's Al-Bahri Sport Club with a score of 3-1. However, coach Phung Cong Hung was still cautious in choosing the strongest lineup to compete with the weakest opponent in the group, Sri Lanka.
In the first game, the Vietnamese team won 25-19 when the attackers Nguyen Hoang Thuong, Tu Thanh Thuan, and Ngo Van Kieu played quite well. However, there were times when the Vietnamese team seemed confused by the fast playing style and tight defense of the Sri Lankan team, so they lost the second game with a score of 25-17.
The third game was dramatic when the Vietnamese team led 17-13 but let their opponents lead 22-21. Middle blocker Hoang Thuong was one of the most prominent faces with his quick attacks on the sidelines that made Sri Lankan blockers unable to hold on. Thanks to that, the Vietnamese team won 26-24.
Boosting their morale, the Vietnamese team won the fourth decisive game with a score of 25-20, securing a 3-1 victory over the Sri Lankan team.
With this result, Vietnam team ranked first in Group A after two wins and secured a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament. In the second round of the group (only for the quarter-final match), Vietnam is in Group E with: Al-Bahri Sport Club, Altay Club (Kazakhstan) and Al Arabi (Qatar).
