It is expected that by 2025, all university and college students nationwide must meet foreign language output standards to be recognized as graduates.

That is the information given by Ms. Vu Thi Tu Anh, Deputy Head of the Department of Secondary Education (Ministry of Education and Training), Deputy Head of the Standing Committee of the National Foreign Language Project 2020, to VOV.VN reporters at the Workshop on English Teaching and Learning Methods organized by the Vietnam Education Publishing House on the morning of June 13 in Hanoi.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Education and Training determines the output standards for students of universities and colleges. For language colleges, students must achieve 4/6 levels (according to the 6-level foreign language proficiency framework), and university students must achieve 5/6 levels.

For students of universities and colleges that do not major in foreign languages, the output standard must be level 3. For students majoring in foreign languages, the output standard must be level 4.

The Ministry of Education and Training has also issued a document guiding regulations and roadmaps for achieving output standards for students majoring in languages and majoring in foreign languages. Starting from the 2015-2016 school year, students in language training courses must meet output standards to be recognized as graduates.

Besides the positive teaching and learning results at major language universities, most of the students have achieved the required output standards, but the system of local universities and colleges still has great difficulty in training students to meet the output standards. Therefore, the education sector in localities needs to have more active participation in foreign language training and teaching.

According to Ms. Vu Thi Tu Anh, it is expected that by 2025, all university and college students nationwide will have to meet foreign language output standards to be recognized as graduates.

Contributing to teaching English at the primary level, Professor Virginia Evans, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Express Publishing, said that teachers need to innovate skills and methods to help primary school students adapt and learn English well.

The Project on Teaching and Learning Foreign Languages in the National Education System from 2008 to 2020 (Project 2020) mentions teaching English from primary school level. However, to implement the Project, many localities and schools do not have enough facilities and teachers, so teaching for primary school students is not yet effective.

According to Professor Virginia Evans, to teach English to primary school students effectively, the most important thing is to make them feel excited and interested. During class, teachers must take advantage of pictures, tapes, and music to help students remember new words and pronunciation, as well as promote creativity by giving exercises that test students' intelligence, agility, and problem-solving skills.

Textbooks should be accompanied by audio CDs with pronunciation and speaking at the appropriate speed for students to learn English correctly. Textbooks should include an introduction to the culture and language of Vietnam and other countries./.
