Aleksander Ceferin, who has just been elected as the President of the Union of European Football Associations, has proposed to restore the bidding process for the UEFA Champions League final. However, the competition will not only be between European stadiums but also other venues around the world.

“It is an idea and we will consider it,” said the new UEFA president, adding that the geographical distance between continents would not be a problem.

Currently, the finals of the Champions League and Europa League are being rotated across Europe each season, instead of being concentrated in just a few large stadiums as before.

“The bidding process needs to be open because if the Champions League and Europa League finals are arranged for political purposes, it is not good,” Mr. Ceferin added.

In recent times, UEFA has continuously proposed changes to the format of European championships at both national and club levels. These include the EURO 2020 being hosted by 13 cities or most recently the plan to bring Champions League matches to the weekend.

This season, the Champions League final will take place at the Millennium Stadium (Cardiff, Wales). If President Ceferin's idea is approved, it is very likely that in the coming seasons, fans will witness the most important match of the European football season held in the US or China.
