'Local education programs in Nghe An need to have their own characteristics'

On the morning of March 9, the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An organized a workshop to contribute ideas to the draft Local Education Program of Nghe An province in the 2018 general education program.The workshop was attended by researchers, scientists, officials, teachers and a large number of intellectuals of the province.

Speaking at the Workshop, Dr. Tran Dinh Thuan - Local Education Content Consultant, Editor-in-Chief of Nghe An Province's Local Education Program said: In the 2018 general education program, local education is one of the newly issued contents and is an "intrinsic" part of the 2018 general education program.

In particular, at the primary level, local education is integrated mainly in experiential activities and some other subjects such as: Ethics, Nature and Society, Vietnamese, History and Geography... At the secondary school (THCS) and high school (THPT) levels, local education content is regulated with a duration of 35 periods/school year.

The content of local education aims to equip students with basic or current knowledge about culture, history, geography, economy, society, environment, career orientation, etc. of the locality, supplementing the general compulsory education content unified throughout the country. From there, fostering students' love for their homeland, awareness of learning and applying what they have learned to contribute to preserving the cultural values ​​of local ethnic communities, building a more and more developed local culture, economy and society.

To meet the set goals, the development of local education programs must be carefully considered and selected. Dr. Tran Dinh Thuan also said: With its own characteristics, the development of local education programs is a new challenge because Nghe An has all regions with many different ethnic groups. Moreover, Nghe An is a province with many unique and typical features, so it is necessary to consider carefully when choosing the content to develop the program.

Speaking at the workshop, many opinions also affirmed: Building a local education program is necessary to contribute to forming students' abilities and qualities, which are autonomy and self-study ability, communication and cooperation ability, problem-solving ability and creativity; the qualities of patriotism, humanity, diligence, honesty, and responsibility.

In addition, develop students' ability to adapt to life and know how to apply knowledge (nature, culture, society) into practice, and behave with nature in accordance with the requirements of sustainable development and environmental protection of the country and locality.

However, for effective implementation, the local education program should not be comprehensive and heavy on academic knowledge, but should be general and carefully selected. The program also needs to be built in an open direction to be easy to learn, easy to understand, with the characteristics of each locality for easy application in all regions, all subjects and most importantly, must develop students' capacity according to the set goals.
