Dental X-rays carry a high risk of meningioma.
According to a study by scientists at Yale University (USA), published on April 9th, people who regularly have dental X-rays have a higher risk of brain tumors compared to others.
This study, conducted with 1,433 meningioma patients aged 20 to 79, showed that those who had annual dental X-rays had a 1.4 to 3 times higher risk of developing this type of tumor compared to those who did not, and the incidence of this type of tumor depended on the type of dental X-ray taken.

A meningioma is a tumor that forms in the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
These are benign tumors and they rarely grow rapidly; however, these tumors can impair a person's functions and, in some cases, can be fatal.
According to Elizabeth Claus, the lead researcher, people visiting the dentist are now exposed to less intense radiation than they used to.
"The aforementioned study has given us an opportunity to raise awareness about the use of X-rays for dental imaging."
