According to RIA Novosti on February 28, British analyst Alexander Mercuris said that Europe's main goal is to cut off the Baltic region from Russia's power grid to create an energy crisis in Kaliningrad - a Russian enclave located in the heart of Europe.

“The Europeans planned in 2018, and maybe even earlier, to disconnect the Baltic states from the Russian power grid, which would entail disconnecting the energy in Kaliningrad. The European Union would supply the Baltic states with electricity, and Kaliningrad would be plunged into darkness, a major crisis would break out there. This would pave the way for various events that could force Russia to make concessions, or perhaps, in the imagination of some, Kaliningrad could be quickly seized. But Russia anticipated this and was prepared for such a scenario,” said expert Alexander Mercuris.

Mr. Mercuris explained that in 2014, Russia became self-sufficient in energy for its Kaliningrad exclave.

"Without blackouts in Kaliningrad, electricity prices will not increase. On the contrary, Europeans, especially the Baltic countries, are completely unprepared. Now they have to buy electricity from the EU at double the price, and there are even frequent blackouts," the analyst said.

Earlier, on February 8, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia left the international energy system BRELL, named after the first letters of the participating countries (Belarus, Russia, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia). The grid operators of the Baltic countries informed Russia and Belarus of their plans in July 2024. After leaving the common energy system, electricity prices in the Baltic region increased sharply. In Estonia, the Estonian Cell wood processing plant stopped operating.

This is just the beginning, market experts say, with a domino effect underway with the closure of metallurgical and chemical plants across the Baltic region.
