Following the attack on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, the United States has decided to send an additional 1,000 troops to the region.

According to Jen Tamer, a Middle East expert at the Center for Crisis and Policy Research (ANKASAM - USA), by declaring that Iran is responsible for the Gulf incident, they want to prepare public opinion for military intervention.

The expert said the United States had previously used similar tactics and had sent its warships to the region after Iran threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz.

"A recent statement by acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan about their desire to send 1,000 more troops to the Middle East suggests that Washington's actions could be repeated. Russia also sees the move to send more troops as a provocation."

Mr Tame also said the US action could be seen as an attempt to "force Iran into war".

Meanwhile, speaking about a possible military scenario, the expert sees similarities with events in Iraq and notes:

"The United States cannot afford to intervene militarily in Iran, which is three times larger than Iraq. Perhaps to carry out an invasion of Iran, the US would need about 2 million soldiers. Since 2003, they have not been able to ensure security in Iraq with a contingent of 100,000 soldiers. In addition, in the event of an invasion of Iran, the Americans would have to face a force of nearly 1.5 million people ready for emergency mobilization, including members of the IRGC's Basij militia. The Pentagon understands that it does not have enough resources to counter these Iranian militia units in an open clash," Tamer concluded.
