The new Israeli attack on Syria, which took place on the night of Monday, January 21, lasted about 50 minutes.

The Israeli military announced that they attacked Iranian targets. A military source in Syria told Sputnik that Syrian air defenses shot down a significant number of missiles before they reached their targets.

"The Israeli enemy launched a massive air and ground attack with several cruise missiles. Our air defense systems immediately repelled the enemy's missile attack," a Syrian military source said.

State-run Ikhbariya TV reported that air defense forces shot down “dozens” of Israeli targets. The channel noted that Israel used a variety of weapons in the attack.

Israel has been attacking Syria for two days in a row. On Sunday, the Russian National Defense Control Center reported that on January 20, Syrian air defenses repelled an attack by four Israeli Air Force F-16 bombers. According to the Center, air defenses shot down seven missiles launched from the Mediterranean Sea at Damascus International Airport.

Following the attacks on Damascus on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that dealing with Iran's military presence in Syria is a long-standing policy of the Jewish state.

Earlier, Israel attacked Syria on the night of January 12, resulting in damage to a warehouse and several aircraft at Damascus airport. The Syrian Foreign Ministry then once again asked the UN to immediately take measures to prevent repeated Israeli attacks. Prime Minister Netanyahu acknowledged this fact and said that Israel "will not stop its actions to push Iran out of Syria".

In an interview with Sputnik, expert Vladimir Fitin of the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies (RISI) gave his opinion on this matter.

"Nothing new has happened. If earlier Israel tried not to confirm the attacks on Syria, then recently it officially announced that Tel Aviv will continue to strike Syria to destroy all Iranian military facilities on this territory. So the only difference is that the Syrian air defense system is becoming more effective (presumably, it is being adjusted with the help of Russian specialists). For example, according to this information, the Syrian air defense system successfully shot down missiles launched at facilities near the Damascus airport," said expert Vladimir Fitin.
