American expert identifies the underlying cause of the Russia-Ukraine conflict
(Baonghean.vn) - Professor Mearshimer, a political science researcher at the University of Chicago, assessed that the US and its European allies want Ukraine to become a member of NATO, all to turn Ukraine into a part of the West.
In an interview on April 30, American expert John Mearsheimer said that the underlying cause ofRussia-Ukraine conflictis NATO expansion, and "the Russians are reacting to Western plots to turn Ukraine into a Western bulwark on the border with Russia".

"From Russia's perspective, this is clearly unacceptable. It represents an existential threat, and that is what led to the crisis," stressed Professor Mearsheimer, who is renowned for his research in political science and international relations.
According to the American expert, Russia's strategy is to ensure that Ukraine does not become part of NATO, and by extension, does not become part of the West. Scholar Mearsheimer said: "The Americans are determined to win, the Russians are determined to win. In a situation like that, it is difficult to see how you can find some kind of peace agreement to end this war."
However, as a realist scholar in the field of international relations, Mr. Mearsheimer believes that NATO expansion will be largely limited to Europe, and points out some ramifications of the conflict, including the possibility of a global food crisis.
"There are obviously going to be some really important ramifications, and compared to 20 or 30 years ago, it's a big turning point," he stressed. "When you talk about the future of international peace, it looks pretty bleak," Mearsheimer said, adding that "the relationship between Russia and the US is really bad and hopefully won't get any worse."
