UN human rights expert: Syria is in "free fall"

Paulo Pinheiro, head of the UN commission investigating human rights abuses in Syria, declared that the country is "in free fall" and has become a battlefield where civilians are the primary victims of "acts of terrorism," ranging from indiscriminate shelling to rape and massacres between factions.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly on July 29, Pinheiro asserted that massacres and other extrajudicial killings, primarily carried out by pro-government forces and some anti-government armed groups, are occurring with "no one being punished."

He urged the Syrian government to stop using inaccurate weapons such as unguided missiles targeting residential areas, and stressed that both sides must end the sieges of cities and towns, cutting off supplies of food, electricity, water, and medical care.

According to Pinheiro, the international community must demand a diplomatic solution to the conflict that has lasted two and a half years and claimed more than 100,000 lives in this Middle Eastern country.
