Kidney cancer surgery using a modern robotic system was successfully performed at K Hospital – marking a turning point in kidney cancer surgery in Vietnam.

2 hours of successful kidney cancer surgery with the Xi generation Davinci Robot Endoscopy system

On May 18, at Tan Trieu facility, experts from K Hospital chaired by Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Binh - Deputy Director of the hospital discussed, exchanged and shared experiences in treating kidney cancer with experts from the University of London, UK.

At the program, 5 international experts including Prof. Maxine Gia Binh Tran; Dr. Darrell Jonathon Allen; Dr. Hannah Warren; Dr. Volanis Dimitrios; Ms. Shoniwa Angelina and Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Binh - Deputy Director of the hospital, Dr. Do Anh Tuan - Head of the Department of Urology discussed and performed a demonstration of laparoscopic surgery using the Xi generation Davinci Robot system to treat kidney cancer for a 48-year-old male patient being treated at K Hospital. Previously, the patient discovered a kidney tumor during a routine health check-up.

Kidney cancer surgery using a modern robotic system was successfully performed at K Hospital.

Experts at K Hospital said that most kidney tumors have no symptoms. In the past, most kidney tumor patients came to the doctor when the tumor was very large. Nowadays, with the development of the medical industry, kidney cancer patients are increasingly detected earlier.

The CT scan results showed that the 48-year-old patient had a right renal tumor measuring about 5cm with typical imaging characteristics of a malignant tumor. The patient was diagnosed with right renal cancer, stage T1bN0M0. The CT scan showed that the patient had anatomical changes with 2 renal arteries compared to a normal person with only 1 renal artery. Therefore, the treatment of the renal pedicle area will be more difficult.

K Hospital experts and British experts consulted before surgery and discussed with the patient's family. The patient underwent surgery to treat kidney cancer with the Xi generation Davinci Robot Endoscopy System.

Doctors of the Department of Urology, under the direct guidance and surgery of Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Binh, discussed with British experts and performed a radical robotic nephrectomy for the patient.

The surgery was broadcast live from the operating room to the conference hall, experts discussed and exchanged on a number of issues such as the current situation of laparoscopic surgery for kidney cancer in the UK and Vietnam; Handling difficult situations in laparoscopic surgery for kidney cancer... After 2 hours, the surgery was successfully performed, the patient continued to be monitored and treated.

A turning point in kidney cancer surgery in Vietnam

Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Binh said that open surgery for kidney cancer is a classic method that has been applied in kidney cancer for a long time. However, this method often leaves a long scar that is unsightly for the patient, the recovery process is therefore longer, and the feeling of pain is more.

With the latest and most modern method today, robotic surgery has been widely applied in medicine, including urological surgery. Robotic surgery for kidney cancer treatment has many advantages over conventional open or laparoscopic surgery, which are: clear observation, high flexibility of robotic arms, meticulous dissection helps surgeons operate with higher precision.

"Robotic surgery has many clear advantages: ensuring aesthetics, minimal trauma, no bleeding, maximum pain relief and quick recovery. We are also very happy that the surgery was performed successfully - marking a turning point in kidney cancer surgery in Vietnam" - said Dr. Pham Van Binh.

With today's successful surgery and the exchange and sharing between experts from K Hospital and the UK, many opportunities will be opened up for the application of high technology in cancer treatment, especially robotic laparoscopic surgery to treat urological cancer in general and kidney cancer in particular, helping to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment services, thereby, patients can rest assured and trust in the country's medical system and many patients at home and abroad trust and choose to be treated in Vietnam.

Currently, the Robotic endoscopic surgery method is only applied in some countries such as the US, UK, Korea... The da Vinci Xi Robot generation is the most advanced robot generation today and is the only system in Vietnam used at K Hospital.

Gastrointestinal cancer surgeries, especially colorectal cancer, using this surgical technology have been performed and reported at major conferences. The first cases of head and neck, gynecological and urological diseases using robotic surgery have been performed at K Hospital since 2021...
