Can we be professional?
(Baonghean) - Statistics on university entrance exam candidates in recent years show that 25.6% of candidates chose three majors: Business Administration, Accounting, and Finance - Banking. The remaining candidates applied to over 230 other majors, revealing an imbalance in students' choice of majors. In particular, the Maritime Economy Program aims for Vietnam to become a strong maritime nation by 2020, with the maritime economy contributing 53-55% of the country's total GDP, including a significant contribution from the fishing, aquaculture, and seafood processing industries for export. Despite this strategy, there are shortcomings right from the start. In the 2011-2012 academic year, the Fisheries Exploitation Faculty of Nha Trang University set a target of recruiting 180 students for three majors: Fisheries Exploitation, Maritime Safety, and Ship Control.
However, only four candidates passed their first-choice applications, and even including the college-level programs (requiring scores of 10 points or higher), fewer than 30 candidates were admitted. The Aquaculture Department of the College of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Bac Ninh only managed to enroll a few dozen students... Without a workforce with basic training, can our country's fisheries economy become modern and professional?
