Since the 1950s, the traditional friendship between Vietnam and India was established by President Ho Chi Minh and Indian Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Throughout history, Vietnam and India have always supported each other in the resistance wars against colonialism and imperialism to gain independence and freedom.

And just one week after Hanoi was liberated, a high-ranking delegation from the Republic of India, led by Indian Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, was one of the first international guests to visit Vietnam.

In 1958, President Ho Chi Minh visited India. This event marked a new development in the diplomatic relations between Vietnam and India.

In 1972, Vietnam and India established diplomatic relations, opening a new chapter in the friendship and cooperation between the two countries. The Vietnam-India relationship has grown further from high-level visits between the two countries.

During his visit to Vietnam in 2014, Indian President Pranab Mukherjee affirmed that Vietnam is a very important pillar in India’s “Look East” policy. Vietnam is India’s strategic partner in ASEAN as well as in the wider region. This shows that India attaches great importance to and wishes to develop the relationship between the two countries to a new level.

As evidence of this, in September 2016, Vietnam and India officially established a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Over the years, two-way trade turnover between the two countries has continuously increased. In 2013, it reached 5.23 billion USD; in 2014, it was 5.6 billion USD; in 2015, it was 5 billion USD. The two countries aim to reach 15 billion USD by 2020. India ranks 28th out of 116 countries and territories investing in Vietnam, currently having 118 valid investment projects in Vietnam with a total registered capital of 590 million USD.

Relations between the legislative bodies of the two countries have been strengthened and developed in recent times. The two countries' National Assemblies have actively exchanged information, high-level delegations, committees, National Assembly deputies, and parliamentary groups to share operational experiences.

The National Assemblies of the two countries support and create favorable conditions in terms of legal policies in the bilateral friendship and cooperation, especially issues of mutual concern and practical benefits in politics, security, defense, science and technology.

The official visit to the Republic of India by National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan is of great significance, deepening the relationship between Vietnam and India; more specifically the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries; consolidating and further enhancing multifaceted cooperation in the context of the two countries heading towards the 45th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations and 10 years of establishing the 2007-2017 Strategic Partnership.

In the context of Vietnam's increasingly deep integration with the world, the visit of National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan to India aims to promote and deepen relations between the National Assembly and the legislative body, laying a solid foundation for long-term stable relations between the two countries./.
