The love story of the former French ambassador and the Vietnamese reporter

May 2, 2016 17:09

The work of writer Hieu Constant is a dialogue between Jean Claude - who used to hold the position of French Ambassador to Vietnam and Hoai Thu - a Vietnamese reporter.

Twenty years ago, Hoai Thu was lucky enough to meet Ambassador Jean Claude to give gifts at a charity event in a poor village after the flood. In Thu's memory, the ambassador with his friendly smile and warm handshake left a deep impression, a feeling that could not be expressed in words, so she was determined to meet the ambassador again as a promise "A bientôt... See you again" before he left.

To realize her dream, Hoai Thu has tried her best despite the harsh family circumstances that at times seemed to crush her will: her father died, her mother died, her brother went to jail, and even more painful when she learned the truth that she was not the biological daughter of the very people who loved and raised her...

Twenty years with many challenges and hardships, she finally realized that dream. The dialogue between Hoai Thu and Jean Claude runs throughout the novel À bientôt! See you again!.

There, the past and present of the two people coexist. Through memories, the two people are drawn into each other's stories and then realize that they have understood, sympathized, and loved each other without realizing it, so that when they say goodbye to each other, they know that love will bind them together for the rest of their lives. And, finally, the words that come from Jean Claude's heart: "I can do anything right now as long as I can be with this charming and attractive Vietnamese girl"! Only faith in love is enough to go to the end of the road. That is the decision. That is all the hope, the promise of Jean Claude to Hoai Thu: À BIENTÔT! See you again!

Writer Hieu Constant gives books to readers.

Author Hieu Constant is a Vietnamese expatriate currently living in France. Her works are all imbued with the typical Vietnamese-French cultural colors. She shared about the inspiration for writing À bientôt! See you again!: “From the moment I began to feel that France was truly my second homeland, I began to immerse myself in it, to learn more about its history and culture, to “crawl” into every corner of life and the soul of the French people. I realized the advantages and disadvantages of this culture, the differences in educational methods, behavior, in schools as well as in families between the two countries of France and Vietnam. I intended to write a book that expressed my observations, thoughts and feelings... But I also had to choose characters that were worthy of those ideas. And chance decided everything, I was lucky to meet real-life role models and thus, this novel was formed...”

Through the book, the overseas Vietnamese female writer also wants to send a message about the effort to succeed to everyone, just like the book's preface: "Knowing your small destiny, with great effort, you will surely succeed"!

Constant's real name is Le Thi Hieu, a Vietnamese female writer and translator born in 1971 in Thuong Tin - Ha Tay (old), currently living in France. She has 4 published works, a collection of short stories published together and about 50 translations.

One of her most prominent works is the autobiography Being a Daughter-in-Law in France, part of the series Being a Daughter-in-Law in a Strange Land published by Women's Publishing House. The book resonated when it realistically portrayed the life of a Vietnamese bride in faraway Europe, a typical woman of the integration era: proactively seeking happiness, building a home, harmoniously handling personal - family - social relationships and especially not losing her own identity and that of her nation.
