In a moving speech marking their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997, the Queen said: "I'm afraid Prince Philip often has to listen to me. Often we'll discuss my upcoming speech and, as you might imagine, he's always very direct in expressing his views.
He is a man who is reluctant to accept praise but he has been a source of strength for me and has been with me through many years. I and my family, this country and many other countries owe him more than he ever claimed or we know."
