CBS News reported on February 11 that CIA Director John Brennan said that the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) group in Iraq and Syria has used chemical weapons and now has the ability to produce small quantities of chlorine gas and asphyxiating gas.

In an interview broadcast by CBS News on the news program “60 Minutes,” Mr. John Brennan said that “we have some evidence of where ISIS has used chemical munitions on the battlefield.”

He also said IS now has the ability to produce small amounts of weapons-grade chlorine or ash gas.

The CIA chief also warned of the risk that IS could seek to export chemical weapons to the West to supplement the group's financial resources.

The information was released two days after US Director of National Intelligence James Clapper made similar statements before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

According to Mr. James Clapper, IS has used chemical weapons in Iraq and Syria and this is the first time an extremist group has produced and used chemical weapons since members of the extremist sect Aum Shinrikyo used sarin gas to attack the subway system in the Japanese capital Tokyo in 1995./.
