Salvatore Schillaci won the Golden Boot and Golden Ball in his only major tournament, the 1990 World Cup.

Schillaci rose to international fame at the 1990 World Cup, where he helped host Italy to third place in the tournament, scoring six goals to win the Golden Boot. His individual efforts were even rewarded when he beat Lothar Matthaus and Diego Maradona to the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player. However, this was the only memorable moment he experienced at international level. Schillaci only scored once more, against Norway in 1991, and ended his Azzurri career with six goals in 16 games.

The former striker died on Wednesday morning, according to a statement from the Palermo hospital where Schillaci had been admitted 11 days earlier for treatment of colon cancer. Palermo, where Schillaci began his youth career, said in a statement: “Palermo FC, together with President Dario Mirri and the entire City Football Group family, would like to express our deepest condolences on the sudden passing of Salvatore Schillaci, and our condolences to the family of Francesco Di Mariano.”
