Clinton beats Trump by more than 2 million popular votes

The statistics were released as a group of American lawyers and scientists said the vote count in three states was inaccurate and called on Mrs. Clinton to request a recount.

On November 23, the New York Times cited data from political analyst Dave Wasserman of the Cook Political Report website saying that Mrs. Clinton won 64.23 million popular votes while Mr. Trump won 62.21 million votes.

This result means that Mrs. Clinton won 1.5% of the popular vote over Mr. Trump. This is an unprecedented difference in votes for the losing candidate since the 1876 election in the US.

Despite winning the popular vote, the Democratic candidate lost the electoral vote, losing in three states where she was considered to have an advantage: Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Mr. Trump won narrowly in all three states, with the official vote count not being announced until more than two weeks after the election.

The widening popular vote margin is unlikely to change the final outcome. However, a group of lawyers and scientists are urging Clinton to call for recounts in the three states, citing the possibility of errors or hacked voting machines.

If the recounts are successful and Clinton wins Michigan and Wisconsin, she will receive a total of 258 votes. If she wins Pennsylvania, she will receive an additional 20 electoral votes. That means Trump can return to being a private citizen.

In addition, at least six Democratic electors have signed a pact to prevent billionaire Trump from becoming president. Their goal is to convince at least 37 Republican electors to withdraw their votes for Trump so that he does not reach the minimum 270 electoral votes.

The November 8 vote did not officially put billionaire Donald Trump in the White House, but only determined the 538 electors who will vote for the president on December 19. In theory, Mr. Trump won 306 electoral votes compared to Mrs. Clinton's 232 votes, helping the billionaire become president-elect.

Mrs. Clinton's victory in the popular vote but still failure to win the presidency has once again sparked debate about the electoral college system that determines election results in the US.

Mr Trump had previously criticised the system, but after his victory on November 8, he said it had a "certain intelligence".
