Before the university entrance exam, Huong and her parents' wish was that she would take the entrance exam to a teacher training college or a school in the security and defense sector to help her parents with tuition fees. However, because she was too small and did not meet the standards to take the entrance exam for the security or military sector, and with the analysis and encouragement of her homeroom teacher, Phan Thi Ly, Huong chose the medical and pharmaceutical major of Hanoi National University to register for the exam. "Last year, the entrance score for the pharmaceutical major of Hanoi National University was 26 points, so I registered for the exam but was very worried. After finishing the exam, I graded myself according to the ministry's answers and got about 26 points and waited anxiously. I did not expect to be the valedictorian," Huong confided.
Talking about the secret to becoming valedictorian, the little pepper girl said that she has almost no secret, nor the conditions to go to extra classes or study in a cram school, but only tries to learn the knowledge in textbooks, diligently doing different types of exams. For each type of exam, she has to try to get the maximum score and not put too much pressure on herself when taking the exam.
Since receiving the results of being valedictorian, Huong and her family have received encouragement and congratulations from her siblings, friends, neighbors and teachers. However, Mr. Hong Van Liem, Huong's father, said that the family's life has hardly changed except for the obvious worry. Mr. Liem's family has 3 sao of rice fields, his wife has kidney stones, every few years when the stones get big, she has to go to the hospital for surgery. For many years, his family has been classified as a poor household, and in early 2014, they were promoted to near-poor household in the commune. The main occupation is farming, in addition, to earn more money to cover living expenses, Mr. Liem has to work as a construction worker. “I am happy that my child got a high score, but when I think about having to stay in Hanoi to study for 5 years, my family is very worried because every month we have to regularly provide about 3 million VND for my child’s education. My family is not eligible for tuition exemption, so the whole family is quite worried. However, for the future of our children, we have to try our best,” Mr. Liem shared.

Hong Thi Huong is one of the two youngest students in the class but always has impressive academic achievements. |
Homeroom teacher Phan Thi Ly commented that Huong is a very good and hard-working student. Her health is not as good as other students, but in return, she has very good academic performance and a confident test-taking style, so before taking the exam, the homeroom teacher as well as the subject teachers were very reassured. Because her house is far from school and she does not have the conditions to go to extra classes, during the process of participating in the review for provincial excellent students as well as the university entrance exam, Huong often stayed at her teacher's house and was considered as a grandchild in the family. "When I heard that Huong was valedictorian, I was very happy, thinking as if my child had just passed. Although there are many difficulties ahead, I hope that she will overcome them to become a pharmacist and fulfill her dream of changing her life," the homeroom teacher confided.
Teacher Phan Thi Ly said that up to this point, her homeroom class 12D has about 40/48 students who are sure to pass the university entrance exam. In addition to Hong Thi Huong, who was the valedictorian, the class has 3 salutatorians who also achieved very high scores: Duong Le Toan, salutatorian of Hanoi University of Science and Technology (28.5 points), Nguyen Huu Son, salutatorian of Vinh University, Trang Thi Giang, salutatorian of Hanoi Pedagogical University 2,...
“Thanh Chuong 3 High School is located in a poor commune, in region 1. Most of the students are also from poor families and do not have the conditions to attend extra classes, but they have tried very hard to achieve high results in the university entrance exam. This is a good sign, showing the determination and efforts of the students, but also showing that the quality of training at the school is increasingly improving,” shared teacher Phan Thi Ly.
