After being sexually assaulted and robbed by Khanh, the girl went home, called him to get her phone back, promised to "please" him, and then asked a friend to apprehend him.
On December 12, the police in Binh Tan district (Ho Chi Minh City) temporarily detained Nguyen Duong Khanh (25 years old) for investigation into the crimes of rape and robbery.
Early two mornings ago, Ms. Tuyet (21 years old, from Dong Thap province) called a motorbike taxi through a mobile app and was picked up by Khanh. He drove her around aimlessly, claiming he didn't know the way, then borrowed her phone to "check the map" for directions.
When they arrived at an empty plot of land in Binh Tri Dong B ward (Binh Tan district), Ms. Tuyet demanded her phone back, but Khanh stopped the car and declared, "I'm going to steal it."
He suddenly wrestled the girl to the ground, pulled out a switchblade, and held it to her neck, forcing her to "comply" with him. After committing the crime, Khanh drove Ms. Tuyet to a nearby intersection and left.
That same afternoon, after waking up from his nap, Khanh saw that the phone he had just stolen had a missed call, so he called back. On the other end of the line, Ms. Tuyet pleaded for the phone back, promising to make him "happy".
When Khanh arrived at the meeting point for the "transaction" on Tran Xuan Soan Street (District 7), Tuyet and her friend shouted for help and apprehended him, handing him over to the police.
The victim's name has been changed.
