'Opportunities to get rich in agriculture are everywhere in the fields'

While domestic agricultural production faces difficulties in consumption and competition from foreign goods, Vietnamese-Canadian businessman Nguyen Thanh My sees opportunities everywhere in bringing high-tech industry into agriculture.

Mr. My went to learn about the reality of the fields in Dong Thap.

Regulations on fertilizer production conditions cause difficulties for businesses. Meanwhile, after many years living in Vietnam, the issue he was most concerned about was agricultural products related to consumer health. After much thought, he decided to apply high technology to agriculture and established 3 companies: Rynan Smart fertilizers (producing smart fertilizers); Rynan Technologies (producing IoT - Internet of Things devices); Rynan Agrifoods (agricultural products) with the desire to establish a smart and safe agricultural value chain from input to output.

Ideas from practice

A smart fertilizer factory with an average capacity of about 20,000 tons/year (maximum 50,000 tons/year) invested by Mr. My with nearly 10 million USD, built in Long Duc Industrial Park (Tra Vinh). It is expected that the fertilizers produced by Rynan will be on the market in early 2018.

Mr. My explained that conventional nitrogen fertilizers used in rice cultivation will lose about 60% after 12 days of application due to evaporation and leaching. The smart fertilizers produced by his company can overcome these problems thanks to their ability to slowly dissolve under control, the fertilizer granules contain nutrients N, P, K, trace elements... and are encased in nano-sized polymer shells, capable of adjusting the release of nutrients into the soil according to the nutrient absorption needs of plants at different stages of development.

“Using smart fertilizers helps farmers reduce more than 50% of fertilizer use, 50% of greenhouse gas emissions, 30% of water used for cultivation, 50% of water pollution... and increase productivity by 10-30% depending on the method of fertilization and the type of crop,” the overseas Vietnamese businessman said.

In 8 months, Vietnam has 8,122 more fertilizer products. Coming from the agricultural sector, Mr. My understands that irrigation is one of the important factors that determine the success of rice production. However, in the Mekong Delta region, there are years of prolonged drought, farmers do not have water for irrigation, leading to severe crop damage.

From there, he came up with the idea and together with his staff, designed and manufactured monitoring buoys using cloud computing technology, capable of continuously updating tide levels, salinity, temperature, pH, etc. of water sources. Users can recognize the above information and control pumping and draining water through software designed by the company, installed on smartphones. These monitoring buoys were arranged by Mr. My on rivers in Tra Vinh to control 24/24 hours...

Vietnamese people are confident

Faced with the reality that about 40% of domestic food and agricultural products are spoiled due to poor harvesting, transportation and preservation, Mr. My decided to invest 15 million USD in producing food packaging using advanced technology. He said that simply changing the concentration of oxygen, nitrogen and carbonite in the packaging can increase the preservation time of meat, fish, shrimp and other agricultural products by 3-5 times. For example, the production of multi-layer packaging can preserve vegetables for up to 40 days while still being fresh. And smart packaging products are not only supplied to food distributors in Vietnam but also exported to 50 countries, and are ordered by many famous foreign brands.

Pesticide-free agriculture - Mr. My's "philosophy" of smart agriculture sounds very simple but practical, which is sustainable agriculture, increasing the ability to respond to climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and most importantly increasing farmers' income. He said that up to now, when it comes to intelligence, Vietnamese people often have an inferiority complex, because they do not believe in themselves. In fact, in the field of agriculture, Vietnamese people can completely master technology. He said that the above agricultural products are all "made in Tra Vinh" because they are invented and produced by enthusiastic young engineers of the company located in Tra Vinh.

“If you don’t believe me, come down to Tra Vinh, I will show you the job. If you do well, I believe there are plenty of opportunities in agriculture in the fields,” Mr. My confidently said.
