On the afternoon of July 20th, in an interview with a VNA reporter, Mr. Nguyen Hong Phuong, Deputy Director of the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Geophysics), stated that the three consecutive earthquakes that occurred last night (July 19th) in Son La were part of the activity of the Muong La-Bac Yen fault.

This fault line has been discovered and documented by Vietnamese and international scientists in fault system maps of Northwest Vietnam.

Scientists have identified this area as one of seven high-risk earthquake zones in the Northwest region. The other six locations are Dien Bien, Lai Chau town, Muong La town, Muong Lay town, Tuan Giao town, and Tam Duong town.

When asked about the possibility of further earthquakes in the area, Mr. Nguyen Hong Phuong stated that earthquakes are always possible along active fault zones, but their intensity cannot be predicted as it depends on the level of fault activity at any given time.

Earlier, on the evening of July 19th, three consecutive earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 3.2 to 4.3 on the Richter scale occurred in Muong La district, Son La province. The earthquakes had focal depths of only about 7 to 8.5 km, resulting in significant shockwaves reaching other areas. Consequently, many Hanoi residents, especially those in high-rise buildings, clearly felt the tremors.
