Trevon Maurice Franklin, 21, of Fresno, California, allegedly posted the movie Deadpool on his personal Facebook page just eight days after the movie premiered in the US in February 2016. Franklin used the name “Tre-Von M.King” on Facebook.
Franklin was arrested Tuesday morning and brought to the Fresno County District Court. Court records show that Trevon Maurice Franklin arrived in shackles. Franklin was advised of his rights and the charges and pleaded not guilty. A federal public defender has been appointed to represent Franklin and his next court appearance is scheduled for July 27 in Los Angeles.
The indictment accuses Franklin of sharing at least “10 copies” of the Deadpool movie worth a total of $2,500.
Federal prosecutors said more than 5 million people were able to see the 20th Century Fox-owned film from Franklin's copies and postings.
