Terry Loong, 40 years old, a Malaysian living in London (UK), was determined not to shower for a month after giving birth despite her body smelling and her hair being tangled and greasy.

Terry believes that abstinence is common in Asia, and her mother did so during all five of her pregnancies. Some of Terry Loong's Chinese friends who live in London also abstain, but not as completely as she did. The mother admits that abstaining from bathing for a month is not pleasant, but is important. She says she will continue to abstain during her future pregnancies.

"Abstinence not only helps me recover physically but also makes me more comfortable mentally," Terry Loong shared.

Terry Loong strictly abstained for a month.

Terry said that after giving birth, her body sweated a lot and her hair was greasy. She could smell the bad odor from her own body but did not care too much. "It's the most natural thing in the world," Terry said. Despite her body odor, she still decided to not bathe for a month as planned. During her first bath after the abstinence period ended, Terry was horrified by the layers of dead skin clinging to her body like cocoons.

Not only did Terry Loong avoid bathing, she also limited her time outside because she was worried that catching a cold could be a source of illness. She didn’t even open the windows or go out into the garden. The Malaysian mother said that although the weather seemed cool, her son Mathew’s immune system was still immature enough to be exposed to the outside environment. During these 30 days, Terry mostly stayed indoors, spending time reading and taking care of her child.

Terry Loong shared that she only broke her abstinence rule when she took her son out to sunbathe for about an hour in the first two weeks. Terry took Mathew for walks, ate outside but did not talk to anyone. Only her husband's parents and uncle were allowed to visit Terry's son in the first month of his life. This mother did not use social media or multimedia entertainment channels during the abstinence period but did not find it boring. Terry's husband was always with her and her child when he worked at home.

Terry's menu does not include cooling foods such as cucumbers and lettuce. She cooks soups or broths for herself, most of which use herbs. One nutritious recipe that Terry especially loves is using jujubes, which she read about on the Internet.Abakus Foods.

The Malaysian mother believes that the month of abstinence helped her avoid postpartum complications such as back pain, hair loss and depression. On the other hand, Terry believes that this period of time helped her family bond more. After a challenging month, Terry Loong feels stronger and ready to start a new journey.
